Surface and heat treatment

Carbonitriding is a thermo chemical surface treatment method. It is a variation of case-hardening used when details are made of low alloyed steels. Addition of ammonia in the furnace atmosphere increases the hardenability of the carburized surface so that the steel that would normally be water cured, can be hardened in oil to achieve high surface hardness.

Tough-hardening means that the steel undergoes a normal curing, but where the subsequent tempering is done at high temperature. Thanks to this high annealing temperature, the steel is not only hard but also gives a toughness, which can be an important feature in various applications.
